This is a continuation of my SAF (shoot a friend)  Project. This is Dr. Stephen Chen, and he’s my dentist.  Technically, I guess this should be labeled shoot a dentist, but the acronym would then be SAD, and that’s sad.
So in this shoot, I wanted the concept to be for my dentist to be the dentist. I thought it was quite amusing. I had a lot of fun telling him what to do, because usually he’s the one telling me what to do.
He’s also an amazing dentist and a great person.  Since he has had a very successful dentistry for a really long time, I asked him for advice for someone who’s starting their own business (me, basically) and this is what he said.

-Maintain good quality in your service.
-Listen to your clients so you can understand what they need/want.
-Don’t think that your way is the only way. If a client wants something done in another way, make your suggestions but do not dismiss what a client wants.
-Instead of complaining, fix the problem.
-Finish your deadlines on time. Make good on your promises.
-Client referrals give the best business.
-All businesses take time. It’s hard in the beginning, but your must persist.
-Be happy about yourself, and your others will be happy too.

It’s not word for word on what he said, I had to do some translating and rewording because he was speaking in Chinese some of the time.

November 23, 2009 Meet Andre Clark (SAF)

This is Andre Clark, a good friend of mine from college and former past Resident Advisor at UC Riverside. Holla! Then he went on to USC to do many great things in the gaming department. And now he’s working at a game developing company and starting his own new gaming business called Peanut Gallery Games . Him and his friends just started the company, and I am very excited for him and excited about the future of his growing company.

So let me explain the photos I took of Andre.  He recently bought the very popular game Modern Warfare 2, and he told me he spent about another hefty bill to get the night vision goggles. And they’re pretty legit. I tried them on a couple of times and turned off the lights and it works!  So I wanted to do a conceptual type of shoot with him with his night vision googles and this what we came up with!

November 5, 2009 Meet Steve Nguyen (SAF)

This is a continuation of my shoot-a-friend-a-week project.

This is Steve Nguyen. I photographed him back in 2007 and both of us has come along way now. I have become a full-time photographer since then, and  he has grown an impressive full-on beard.. He’s also the manager of an electrical engineering company, the owner of his own internet media company called Stickblade Inc, and also one of the producers for a small movie production company based out of UCR called FPS productions.  I’d like to note that this small movie production has exceeded my, and I think I can safely say that of many other people’s expectations. In their ‘low budget’ films they have helicopters, police cars, assault rifles, swat teams, etc etc. Yeah it’s pretty legit. In case you haven’t figured out what type of movies they film, they film my favorite genre; action. Check them out.

So I started shooting Steve, and he said I want something urban. “Oh…” I replied. I put my 85mm ‘pretty’ lens away, and replaced it with my 50mm. And this is what I came up with.

Bulaclac is pronounced ‘boo-lock-lock’ in case you’re wondering. Denton is pronounced ‘den-ton.’ Yup.

So far, my ‘shoot a friend a week’ project is going smoothly. This Denton, one of my closest friends my second year of college.  We were both RA’s and our halls were right next to each other so needless to say we hung out a lot.  After that year unfortunately we parted ways, but I told him upon seeing him after all these years that I don’t remember why we didn’t keep in touch.  He admitted that he was a ‘mooch’, that kept freeloading homework and food off of me.  So what probably happened was I couldn’t stand it anymore, and just didn’t bother to keep in touch.  I also told him I can’t see myself getting annoyed if he’s getting homework for me, but the food, yeah the food might bother me a little bit. When I’m hungry, I become Gollum from Lord of the Rings and the food becomes ‘my precious’ ring. I can’t help it.

Are you interested in becoming part of my shoot a friend a week project?
